Russian Serial Black Widow in Harbin, Manchuria Prison - 1904

FULL TEXT: Harbin, Manchuria, Aug. 27. – The exclusive set in this city, now Russia’s great military base in the Far East, the high society, so to speak, is made up of exiles and chain-gangs transported from the penal island of Saghalien to help build up the town. The leader of the fashion here, the one who parties are the “swellest,” was transported for poisoning three husbands, one after another. Her present spouse is a convicted forger and housebreaker. Persons with no crime to their credit are looked at askance by “society,” which is remarkable, not only for its peculiar composition, but for its grace and amiability.
