Henry Maul - Domestic Violence Was Not Tolerated by Society in 19th Century America - 1896

FULL TEXT: Mascoutah, Ill., Feb. 24—Henry Maul, a farmer residing near Millstadt, had an experience with whitecaps [a vigilante group*] Sunday night, and as a result he now lies in a precarious condition. His recovery is considered exceedingly doubtful. Maul has acquired an unenviable reputation as a wife-beater, and has been repeatedly lined and imprisoned for the offense.

The punishments administered heretofore appeared to have had no good effect upon him, and Saturday Maul became angered at his wife and prepared to administer another beating. The neighbors heard of the trouble, and the to report spread throughout, the town, and in a very short time a mob of masked men marched to Maul's residence and took him to the woods, where, he was whipped into insensibility, after which he was carried home, where he now lies unable to see, speak or hear. Officers are trying to locate the mob leaders, but as the sympathy of the community is against the wife-beater it is found a very difficult matter.
