FULL TEXT: The “Daily Mail” states that the most notorious ainong the Bolshevik terrorists captured and awaiting trial at Kieff [Kiev] is a young woman named Rosa. She murdered with her own and 100 of the volunteers and Russian officers. Killing is described as her favorite amusement. She usually fired a series of revolver shots at each victim, beginnng at the knees and gradually working upwards. Rosa posed as a patriotic countess when Kieff was taken, and offered an officer of Deniken’s army a bouquet, but her identity was quickly discovered. She was unable to deny that she killed the countess whose name she had adopted.
The “Mail” publishes a photograph of
the murderess taken at the Kieff prison, showing a low, pinched fore head and
coarse features.

and systematic oppression conducted by the Bolsheviks after they seized power
in Petrograd and Moscow in 1917. Soviet historiography describes the Red Terror
as having been officially announced on September 1918 by Yakov Sverdlov and
ending about October 1918. However, the term was frequently applied to
political repression during the whole period of the Russia Civil War of
1918–1922. The Cheka (the Bolshevik secret police), conducted the mass
repressions. Estimates for the total number of people killed in the Red Terror
range from 50,000 to two million.
The Red Terror was an effort by the Bolsheviks to eliminate
counter-revolutionaries who belonged to former “ruling classes” as an
implementation of dictatorship of the proletariat. Martin Latsis, chief of the
Ukrainian Cheka, explained in the newspaper Red Terror:
“Do not look in the file of incriminating evidence to see
whether or not the accused rose up against the Soviets with arms or words. Ask
him instead to which class he belongs, what is his background, his education,
his profession. These are the questions that will determine the fate of the
accused. That is the meaning and essence of the Red Terror.”
