Rachel Baker, Serial Killer Nurse – England, 2007

Beginning in 2000, Rachel Baker, with her husband, managed Parkfields Residential Care Home, Butleigh, Somerset, England. Baker received her license in 1987 and had been initially considered "an extremely good" nurse.

Suffering from migraines, she was prescribed powerful painkilling drugs. In 2005 Rachel started abusing opiates. The fact was discovered in 2006 by Sarah Barnett, a member of her staff, who reported this to officials.

On Jan. 8, 2007, following a long string of deaths of patients over a period of a year and a half, an investigation of Parkfields was instigated. A post mortem examination was conducted on the remains of a Lucy Cox and eleven other suspicious deaths were investigated by police. It is thought that on New Year’s Day 2007 Rachel Baker had given her a "massive" overdose of the painkiller tramadol.

The bodies of three other former Parkfields residents Nellie Pickford, Marion Alder and Fred Green were exhumed and analyzed.

On New Year's Day 2007 she murdered a second resident, Lucy Cox, it was claimed.

As the bodies had been in the ground so long, there was no clear evidence of how they died.

Rachel Baker allegedly fed her addiction by "diverting" drugs prescribed for residents at the care home so that she could feed her own addiction. She either stole the drugs from residents who needed them or exaggerated or made up symptoms so that drugs the elderly people did not really need were prescribed.

In January 2009, Rachel Baker charged with murder and possession of controlled drugs. She was accused of having diverted drugs from at least eight residents. The records system at the home showed that “very significant quantities of drugs were unaccounted for". The prosecutor claimed that more than 4,000 tablets were missing along with almost 2,000 ampoules and more than 1,000 doses of oral solution.

On April 8, 2010, Baker “was found not guilty of killing Frances Hay, 85, and Lucy Cox, 97, by injecting lethal doses of painkillers at Parkfields residential care home in Butleigh, near Glastonbury. She was also cleared of attempting to murder Hay. She had admitted 10 counts of possessing class A and C drugs, and one of perverting the course of justice. The following day, however, she was convicted at Bristol Crown Court of the manslaughter of Mrs Cox but acquitted of the manslaughter of another resident, Frances Hay, 85.”

On May 21, 2010 Rachel Baker was “sentenced to nine months to run concurrently for perverting the course of justice, over the lies she wove around her drug consumption including forging records. She was also given 18 months concurrently for possession of class A drugs, and six months concurrently for possession of class B and C drugs.”

Fatima Ben Abdel Kader, Black Widow Serial Killer – Algeria, 1896

FULL TEXT: It is a good thing that Fatima Ben Abdel Kader has been consigned to prison, for she is a terrible man-killer in every sense of the word. She is only an Algerian beauty, not yet forty; but she has already had seven husbands. Her first marriage ended abruptly and early in a divorce. She shot her husband in a fit of jealousy, and the Algerian Judges, finding some extenuating circumstances in the matter, only gave her five years’ imprisonment for the offence. As soon as Fatima was liberated she married a marabout [Muslim teacher], who avenged his predecessors by nearly killing her. Him she deserted ten years ago. Since that event she has marred four times, and had murdered, or caused to be murdered, two of her later husbands and one of her children. As this adventurous widow is reported to be “of ravishing beauty,” it is pleasant to hear that for twenty years to come she will pine in prison at Oran. When she comes forth she will be sixty, and, so far as my recollection goes, no Algerian woman of that age is in the smallest degree “dangerous” in the sense in which that profound philosopher, the elder Weller, applied the word to widows.

Marie-Antoinette Thien, Serial Baby-Killing Mom – France, 1970

FULL TEXT: Paris – President Georges Pompidou is thinking about pardoning a woman who with her husband killed five of their newborn babies so their other three children could have a better life.

Pompidou said last week he was considering clemency for Marie-Antoinette Thien, 38, who was sentenced in December [1970] to five years in prison. Her husband, Rene, 43, a factory worker, got 10 years.

The jurors who convicted the Thiens wrote Poimpidou that the three remaining children – Gabriel, 17, Marie-Claude, 15, and Eric, 22 months – needed their mother.

The couple grew up in poverty and in recent years lived in an isolated neighborhood near Gigny, in the Rhone valley.

Social workers investigated after getting reports that Mrs. Thien had been pregnant considerably more times than there were Thien children growing up. Remains of three infants were found buried in the garden.

The mother told the nine men on the jury – all fathers – that she and her husband killed five babies “in order to give happiness to the older ones, so they would not have a childhood like ours.

After the trial the jurors worried about the surviving children, who had been sent to live with other families. They talked with Gabriel and Marie-Claude, then wrote to Pompidou urging clemency for the mother.

“We don’t disavow the verdict,” they said. “. . . Our initiative aims only . . . at avoiding the addition of indirect – pitiable – victims to all that has already happened.”

“The family lived completely isolated, without any news or information of any kind,” said one juror. “If they had only known about abortion.”

Kannammal, Female Serial Killer – India, 2019

In October 2019, a 54-year-old woman named Kannammal was arrested in Senthipalayam, Tirupur district, Tamil Nadu state, India, on suspicion of committing three murders. Kannammal confessed to the murders and the corpses were discovered buried in her back yard. Police are looking into the possibility that there may be additional victims.

It is thought her daughter Poonkudi and son-in-law Nagendra were her accomplices. The victims were Kannammal’s brother Selvaraj (60) and his wife Vasanthamani (42), and Rajamani (60), and the mother Poonkudi’s mother-in-law. Initial reports state that the first of the three killings occurred in May 2019 and imply that the two others occurred on the same day sometime afterward and involving drugging followed by strangling.

Laurene Dye, Black Widow Serial Killer – Canada, 1999

FULL TEXT: Vancouver – A 42-year-old Vancouver woman with two previous manslaughter charges

Laurene Dye was charged last August with trying to stab to death Oswaldo Sanchez, 42, who recovered in hospital.

At the time of the stabbing, police said the man walked into the emergency ward about 2:30 a. m. claiming that his had stabbed him. Investigators determined the woman was still in her home, where police arrested Ms. Dye and recovered a steak knife.

Police believed the stabbing occurred during a domestic dispute and that alcohol played a role in the incident. Ms. Dye was acquitted March 3.

In 1983, Ms. Dye received an 18-month sentence for killing one husband, and in 1994, she received a 52-month sentence for killing another.

Mrs. Hoffman / Wenzel, Black Widow Serial Killer – Illinois, 1870

FULL TEXT: We mentioned a few days ago the death of Ms. Wenzel, better known as “Mrs. Hoffman,” who committed suicide by poisoning. We also stated that there was little doubt that she had previously poisoned her step-daughter to death, and had made attempts on the life of her husband, who was lying ill at the time of her death.

More light has been thrown upon the case by the death of her husband. Mr. John Wenzel, which took place at his residence near this city, last Tuesday evening, Dr. A. Weirich, who attended him, informs us that Mr. Wenzel unquestionably died from the effects of poison.

The circumstances, some of which we have previously related, are as follows: Mrs. Hoffman, a widow of bad repute, who had buried two husbands, was married four months ago to Mr. Wenzel. She soon took bitter dislike to Wenzel’s little daughter, about eight years old, who was living with them, and some two months ago the child died, evidently from the effects of poison. After the death of the child, the woman manifested a bitter hatred for her husband, and the couple lived together wretchedly unhappy. Wenzel told his former partner in the mining business that she was making his life miserable, and he very much regretted that he had married her. About six weeks ago, Wenzel, who had hardly seen a sick day before, was taken very ill with purging, vomiting, and cramps in the stomach, exhibiting all the symptoms of poisoning. As his wife showed him but little attention during his sickness, she was told by a neighbor that she had better “doctor the old man up,” and get him well, for if he died she would be arrested for poisoning him. He continued ill, however, and expressed his belief that his wife had given him poison. He showed to his neighbors the cup from which were grains of white powder – doubtless strychnine. These revelations apparently troubled Mrs. Wenzel, and she was soon taken ill with symptoms similar to those exhibited by her husband. When visited by the physician, she seemed reluctant to take medicine, and expressed a desire to die. She partially recovered, however. On the 11th inst., she was again taken in the same manner, and died that that night. The paper of strychnine which was afterwards found partially buried, left no doubt that she died from a dose of poison administered by herself. Mr. Wenzel lingered eight days after her death, apparently dying from the effects of poison in the system, and finally expired on Tuesday evening. His body was very much swollen.

The large does which the woman administered produced vomiting and purging, and it is doubtless owing to this fact that the victims survived the first attack. Thus this fiend in human form poisoned a step-daughter, a husband and herself. It is now stated by those who are acquainted with the circumstances of the death of her other two husbands, that their symptoms were similar to those of the last one, and it is believed that they were poisoned. We doubt if another such female poisoner has lived since the days of Lucretia Borgia.

Susan Atkins, Manson Family Serial Killer – California, 1969

Wikipedia (excerpt): Susan Denise Atkins (May 7, 1948 – September 24, 2009) was an American convicted serial killer who was a member of Charles Manson's "Family". Manson's followers committed a series of nine murders at four locations in California, over a period of five weeks in the summer of 1969. Known within the Manson family as Sadie Mae Glutz or Sexy Sadie, Atkins was convicted for her participation in eight of these killings, including the most notorious, the Tate murders in 1969. She was sentenced to death, which was subsequently commuted to life imprisonment when the California Supreme Court invalidated all death sentences issued prior to 1972. Atkins was later incarcerated until her death in 2009. At the time of her death, she was California's longest-serving female inmate.

~ Tate/LaBianca trial

Manson, Krenwinkel, Van Houten, and Atkins went on trial on June 15, 1970. Watson was later tried separately as he was at the time in Texas fighting extradition. Kasabian was offered, and accepted, legal immunity. As Kasabian had not played a direct part in any of the murders and never entered either residence, and by several accounts had challenged Manson over the killings, the offer of immunity to her was less bitterly contested, particularly by the prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi, who has commented that he was relieved the offer was withdrawn from Atkins.

During the sentencing phase of the trial, Atkins testified that she stabbed Tate. She stated that she had stabbed Tate because she was "sick of listening to her, pleading and begging, begging and pleading". Little credibility was given to Atkins' testimony in general, as it frequently contradicted known facts. She claimed "(Manson) told us that we were going to have to get on the stand and claim we had deliberately and remorselessly, and with no direction from him at all, committed all the murders ourselves".

Throughout the trial, Atkins and her co-defendants attempted to disrupt proceedings and were noted for both their lack of remorse for their victims and lack of concern for their own fate. They sang Manson-penned songs while being led to the courtroom. All four defendants were sentenced to death on March 29, 1971. Atkins was transferred to California's new women's death row in April 1971.

~ Prison Marriages

“Atkins married twice while in prison. Her first marriage was to Donald Lee Laisure on September 2, 1981. Atkins became the mercurial Laisure's 35th wife, but the two divorced after he sought to marry yet again. She married a second time, in 1987, to a man fifteen years her junior, James W. Whitehouse, a graduate of Harvard Law School who represented Atkins at her 2000 and 2005 parole hearings. He maintained a website dedicated to her legal representation.” [Wikipedia]

Sandra Bridewell, Suspected Black Widow Serial Killer – 1985, USA

After graduating from high school in 1962, Sandra Camille Powers, who rarely dated as a student, began frequently dating men. Many of them became smitten with Bridewell due to what one of Sandra's friends called her "ladylike, 'poor helpless me' routine." [bio.com]

This “routine” was to serve Sandra, best known as Sandra Bridewell, handily in her three-decade long career as con-woman and serial killer. Suspected of two or three murders of, of targeting at least one female acquaintance for a life insurance/murder scheme, Sandra was never charged for homicide. It was only at the age of 63 that “The Black Widow” as she was then known, thanks to articles by Dallas journalists, was finally jailed. But it was just a minor charge, identity theft, and it only put her away for two years.

Sandra Bridwell had written this phrase over and over in a small tablet (discovered in 2003): "I attract millionaires and billionaires and they have all the resources I need. SIDS

~ Origin of the SIDS concept and term:

“The term sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) was first used in 1969 at an international conference on the causes of sudden death in infants.” Bergman AB, Beckwith JB, Ray CG, Keiter MD. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Causes of Sudden Death in Infants. Seattle, Wash:.:University of Washington Press; 1970; Stephen M. Adams, MD; Matthew W. Good, MD; And Gina M. Defranco, DO, “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome,” Am Fam Physician. 2009 May 15;79(10):870-874.]

~ Description of SIDS:

Mayo Clinic: “Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of a seemingly healthy baby less than a year old. SIDS is sometimes known as crib death because the infants often die in their cribs. Although the cause is unknown, it appears that SIDS might be associated with defects in the portion of an infant's brain that controls breathing and arousal from sleep. Researchers have discovered some factors that might put babies at extra risk. They've also identified measures you can take to help protect your child from SIDS. Perhaps the most important is placing your baby on his or her back to sleep.” AKA: “cot death,” “crib death,” “SUDI ("sudden unexpected infant deaths").”
