FULL TEXT: New York, July 23. – Mary Oberly, a middle aged
French woman, was arraigned in the police court this morning charged with
keeping a baby farm. Her apartments were in a basement reeking with filth. The agent
for the prevention of cruelty to children, a policeman and a health physician waited
for several hours yesterday before the woman turned up, and they followed her
into her apartments. The air of the room was stifling. Every window was closed
and the crevices tightly filled to prevent the air from entering. In an
armchair lay the dead body of an infant, covered with dirt and nearly nude. Asleep
on the floor was a boy seven weeks old. Dr. McCann, of the health board, said
the child died through neglect. It is said that two children died in her den in
a year. An investigation will be made.
