FULL TEXT: An attractive telephone switchboard operator,
Gladys Wojtowicz, 227 E. Jacob, was arraigned in Federal Court here
[Louisville, Ky.] yesterday. She was charged with defrauding the Government by
collecting service-allotment checks from two husbands at the same time.
United States Commissioner Ray H. Kirchdorfer fixed bond at
$300 for Mrs. Wojtowicz, 30, after her attorney, Edwin W. Paul, waived a
preliminary hearing. The amount of fraud charged is $1,475. The case was set
for the March term of court.
The following information was given the commissioner by the
F. B. I. Mrs. Wojtowicz in 1948. He went into the armed services and was sent
to Korea. She got his allotment checks. Fifteen months later she married Edwin
Hoffman, 30, also in the armed services and between July 1, 1951, and June 1,
1952, received checks on both allotments.
Paul said that Hoffman and Mrs. Wojtowicz bought a home and
made a down payment from the proceeds of Hoffman’s checks.
