FULL TEXT: Santa Ana – A 15-year-old babysitter has been
convicted of second-degree murder after a trial in which prosecutors said she
fatally kicked a 7-month-old child left in her care.
The babysitter “stomped and kicked the life out of Matthew
Ballard … this is a clear case of second degree murder,” said Deputy District
Attorney Mike Maguire.
Because she is a minor, the girl convicted Friday was tried
without a jury by Orange County Superior Court Judge James Turner, who set
sentencing for Dec. 14.
Maguire said the babysitter kicked Matthew Ballard on June 3
after the baby’s mother left him with the teen-ager at the mother’s Huntington
Beach apartment.
