Rose Mary Lee, “Allotment Annie” Military Bride Fraudster – Indiana, 1945

FULL TEXT: South Bend, Ind., Dec. 22 – Mrs. Rose Mary Lee, 21, former Michigan City waitress, charged with violating the service men’s dependency allotment act, was in jail here today after failing to provide $1,000 bond fixed by United States Commissioner Gene C. Knoblock at a hearing.

Police Chief Joe Wolf at Michigan City said Mrs. Lee admitted having married two soldiers and a civilian without a divorce. She has been receiving two allotment checks from service men, he said.

In 1942 she married Clifford Elkins at Corinth, Miss., and in 1944 married Lester Payton at Dayton, O., without divorcing Elkins, according to police. After Elkins at Corinth, Miss., and in 1944 married Lester Payton, both service men, went overseas she went to Vincennes, where she was married last year to Robert Lee. Lee was convicted in May on a charge of automobile banditry and sentenced to the State Prison at Michigan City.
