Phoenix, Arizona – Daytona Johnson, 26, was sentenced to five years in prison for her September 11, 2011 attack on her boyfriend with a meat cleaver. The attack, which took place in the presence of the attacker’s three children, left the man with a cut just above his throat. At the time, Johnson was living with the victim, Chad Grubbs, and another ex-boyfriend, Dominick Giarruisso, both whom have fathered children with her.
The violence occurred during an argument. According to
police, Ms. Johnson punched Mr. Grubbs in the face and when Mr. Giarruisso
tried to intervene she did the same to him. She then threw a can at Mr. Grubbs
cutting him above the eye. She assaulted Giarruisso (who has a prosthetic leg)
again, “pushing” him and then left the residence. Five minutes later she
returned “and threatened Grubbs first with a kitchen-style knife that she
pulled from her rear waistband and later with a meat cleaver-style knife that
she put to his throat.” She made a shallow 5 to 6 inch cut to Grubbs’ throat
while saying “I’m going to cut your head off.” After this she fled again.
None of the victims suffered a life threatening injury. Ms.
Johnson was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder, assault
causing serious physical injury, reckless injury, intent to commit assault,
vulnerable adult abuse and three counts of child abuse. She was released on
$60,000 bond.
