Our town is pretty well supplied with John Leslies – with just exactly one too many. There was a John Leslie fined a few days for whipping his wife. He is the “one too many.” It wasn’t John Leslie the house-painter, on Bank Alloy, nor John Leslie the gold- beater, that committed the brutal act, but a drunken John Leslie, a wife-beater, who deserves to be hauled through a sewer, ducked in a green scum puddle, fed on the offal of a soap factory, and whipped with the tail of a pole-cat
