Sara Rae Walters, Charged With Child Torture in Michigan: 60 Injuries - 2011

FULL TEXT: Howell, Mi. -- A 34-year-old Livingston County woman is headed to trial on charges of abusing and torturing her 3-year-old step-grandson.

Sara Rae Walters, of Osceola Township, waived her preliminary hearing Wednesday in Livingston County District Court. She has been bound over to Circuit Court on charges of first-degree child abuse and torture.

Livingston County Sheriff's Department officials say Walters' grandson was admitted to the University of Michigan Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on Oct. 21, 2011.

The child was found to have over 60 different injuries, including a subdural hematoma -- a collection of blood on the surface of the brain -- a core body temperature of 88 degrees and numerous other superficial lacerations and contusions, according to the sheriff's department.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Department conducted a three-month investigation, which they say revealed that the toddler suffered the abuse at the hands of Walters at her Oceola Township home.

Walters was arraigned in February. She remains jailed on a $200,000 cash surety bond.
