Female Serial Killers Executed


Peter Vronsky’s 1997 list of female serial killers includes 27 who were executed: Barfield, Beets, Brinvilliers, Buenoano, Cage, Chesham, Cotton, Dazely, Dean, Deshayes, Dyer, Flanagan, Freeman, Gottfried, Hahn, Higgins, Jegado, Joyce, Lipka, Marek, May, Milner, Rendell, La Tofania, Margaret Waters, Catherine Wilson, Zwanziger.

The following list contains 135 cases of female serial killers who have been executed. An addendum contains cases in which the death penalty was ordered but was either commuted or in which the prisoner is awaiting execution. [In 10 cases listed here two women were executed at once.]

Mar. 17, 1542 – Margaret Davey (Davie) – Smithfield, England – boiled.

Sep. 20, 1587 – Walpurga Hausmännin – Augsburg, Austria – Paraded through town and, in five stages, tortured, right hand cut off, then burned alive at the stake.

June 1609 – Jane Hattersley – East Grinstead, Sussex, England – execution method not yet determined.

Apr. 17, 1635 Elizabeth Evans London, England hanged at Newgate gallows.

Dec. 22, 1658 – Abigall Hill – executed at Cheapside, England – hanged.

1659 – Gratiosa – Rome, Italy – hanged.

Jul. 1659 – Giulia Tofana – Rome, Italy – hanged.

1673 – Louise Mabre, “Murderous Midwife” – Paris, France – was sentenced to be shut up in an iron cage with sixteen wild cats and suspended over a low fire.

Jul. 17, 1676 – Marie-Madeleine-Marguerite d'Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers Paris, France – tortured, beheaded, corpse burned at the stake.

Feb. 22, 1680 – Catherine Deshayes “La Voisin,” – Paris, France – at Place de Grève, burned to death publicly.

Mar. 24, 1684 – Elizabeth Ridgway – Leicester-shire, England – burned at the stake.

Oct. 23, 1693 Mary Compton Tyburn, England “executed.”

May 3, 1740 – Elizabeth & Mary Branch – Ilchester, England – both hanged.

Jan. 7, 1761 – Dorcas Kelly – Dublin, Ireland – burned, then still alive, hanged.

May 24, 1771 – Anne & Alte Chistophersdatter – Norway – axe decapitation.
 
Jul. 1, 1772 – Luisa de Jesus – Coimbra (Lisbon), Portugal – carried through the streets of Lisbon, whipped, hanged and then publicly burnt.

1775 – Aarne Spanjers – Twente, Netherlands – place and method of execution not yet determined; husband executed Sep. 13, 1775.

Jul. 30, 1789 Giovanna Bonanno Palermo, Sicily hanged.

May 16, 1808 – Catherine Bouhours ("Auguste Manette") – Paris, France – executed at the age of 22 (25?); guillotine.
