Mrs. Bernard of Detroit, Female-on-Female Violence - 1881

The subject of female-on-female violence has been almost completely ignored by criminologists, even more so than the more general phenomenon of VbW (Violence by Women), which, in itself has gotten scant attention from objective scholars of crime.

FULL TEXT: Detroit  (Mich.), January 17. – A shocking tragedy was enacted, at Lapeer Village 70 miles north of Detroit, last evening. While the people were at church Mrs Bernard went to the house of Rev. E. Curtis, the Baptist pastor, attacked his wife, an old lady about 65, threw her down, poured gasoline over her clothing, and set it on fire. The poor woman was shockingly burned, and, she lived but a few hours. Curtis until last year was pastor at Greenville in this State for several years. Mrs Bernard came to Lapeer a few weeks ago from Greenville, where she lives, being the wife of quite a prominent lumber man, and a woman about 40 years old. She has been busy meantime attending meetings, mingling in general society, but giving no intimation of any ill will towards her victim. It is believed by many she is insane from religious excitement, but others think the case is one of down right wickedness. She is under arrest.

Mrs. Swarthout, Michigan Child Torturer - 1888

FULL TEXT: Detroit, Dec. 27. – A revolting case of brutality is reported at Reed City, Mich. Mrs. Swarthout, a photographer, has been arrested for maltreating her niece. She is charged with having tied the girl’s legs a stout cord, and then putting in a stick and turning the chord, and then putting in a stick and turning the chord until the child would became almost unconscious with pain. She would also cord her tongue in the same manner until the skin burst. Mrs. Swarthout has been bound over to the next term of court, and in default of $1,000 bail languishes in jail.

The research on this website has turned up historical cases of FSKs that number many times the multiple of the numbers of cases reported in the standard literature. Thus the statistics found in standard literature on FSKs must be treated as obsolete and in need of being re-examined by teams of scholars who can put to use the new research – which includes data on many hundreds of “forgotten” cases – that supersedes what is currently available in order to present a more accurate picture of the subject of FSKs.

Excerpt: Robert St. Estephe, “Breaking the Silence of the Lambs: Female Serial Killers and Collective Amnesia,” Sep. 19, 2015 (also published under the title “Collective amnesia regarding violence by women / call for reform,” A Voice for Men, Nov. 20, 2015)

From: 3. Collective Amnesia

Wuornos was not only not America’s first female serial killer, but was more like the 275th and she was, according to my current count, the 13th to be executed in this country. [15]

The experts have determined that “female serial killers are rare” (in comparison with their male counterparts). The experts, represented, for example, by 135 participants from 10 countries in the FBI’s 2008 international conference on “Serial Murder,” [16] base their claims on incomplete research (without ever stopping to wonder whether historical research is even slightly systematic, let alone as complete as can be reasonably managed). [17]

The “official” number of historical US female serial killer cases (up to the last few years) is often used is 62. The most commonly cited estimate of the ratio of male to female serial killers is 1:6. My own list of US cases from the period 1829-2008 includes 330. [18] We might as just how rare are these criminals when there are 5 times as many as the experts say there are?
